What Exactly Did You Expect Wisconsin?

The people of Wisconsin who for childishly naive reasons actually believed that fair play would determine the outcome of the recent events in their state are I believe at this point gobsmacked by the outcome of the recent Supreme Court election that has taken more twists and turns than the stripes on a candy cane.  As of this moment, the incumbent, David Prosser seemingly will be declared the winner of an election that was initially too close to call into the wee hours of election night on April 5th. The morning of April 6th found his opponent JoAnne Kloppenburg in the lead and apparently the winner with a 200 vote margin of victory.

How convenient was it that all of a suddenly in a county that was pro Prosser, the clerk Kathy Nikolaus inadvertently, forgot about 7,000 votes that she had “saved” on her personal computer….and so of course now actually Prosser is in the lead and will ostensibly if nothing major changes will be declared the winner of this election that was reminiscent of the presidential election of Bush v. Gore back in 2000.

The belief held, by those in Wisconsin, seeking to work within the system and depending on the opposition to “play fair” was in this day and age way past naive. This is a cautionary tale for those of us Americans that actually seek justice and fair play, that those with a vested interest will stoop as far as necessary and that nothing is taboo or out of range in trying to effect whatever changes they seek that support what they wish to accomplish. Case in point is looming Fed Government shutdown.

Folks, they are not going to play fair, they haven’t BEEN playing fair. The last ten years alone are a classic example of this.  If  engaging the enemy you seek to apply to their sense of common decency, you are already starting at a major disadvantage. This lesson is sinking in in Wisconsin today, it is just being felt by the rest of the country. Where at this point it seems that decency and fair play, compassion and ethical behavior are passe.

Let this be a lesson and warning to the entire country who still believes that because they themselves do the right thing, others will as well when engaged in political contests. Don’t believe the hype.
