The Walk – A review
Picked this e-book up as I was in the midst of a reading jag and the overview sounded like it was right up my alley going through changes of my own.
The book poses the question that many of us right now especially given the current economic situation in this country are facing or may have to face – namely What do you do when you lose EVERYTHING? The main character loses just about everything he holds dear – his wife who was his childhood sweetheart, his business that he built from the ground up and as life is apt to do, he pretty much lost everything all at once or in rapid succession. So much so that some events overlap. I found this to be a little more interesting on a personal level being now faced with a similar question – what do you do when you lose everything you value? What do you do next when the life you thought you were going to live upends and leaves you with a blank page to work with? What caught my eye in this instance is that Alan finds himself examining his spiritual beliefs and coming to terms with them in the midst of his embarking on this “adventure”.
The story basically tells the story of a man struggling to figure out what to do when he has basically lost everything that he held dear and that he placed value in. I will not go into all of the specific things that happens to him, but I don’t think Job went through too much more than Alan did.
His losses cause him to embark on a literal journey across country “The Walk”. Stripping away everything else, this forces him to deal with his spirituality, his mortality and re evaluate what is really important. I actually enjoyed the book although it really starts to pick up 3/4 the way through and kind of slams into the end. I found myself a little miffed at the end because it was like but you JUST started… This actually is a book that the first part of a series. I would definitely recommend it and am looking forward to the next installment in this series. In an interesting twist according to the author’s site, there are plans that at the end of the 5 years that was given to this book project that the author and his fans will gather at Key West Florida – To celebrate Alan’s completion of his journey. May have to look into that.
A definite should read…The Walk – by Richard Paul Evans
