working out lately has taken on a whole new meaning. I started running back in the spring and through stops and starts I am happy to say I am still running and still enjoying it. Not as much as I might like but I do run. Thanks to Nike and the NIKE + tracking and site – it has made it something that I actually look forward to doing and looking to see how far I have run, and what my pace is so motivational for me. I don’t have a league of cheerleaders and I usually wind up having to motivate myself I have found that tracking my workouts and progress is the one thing I can look to for motivation and also of late understanding.
I had hit a plateau a month or so back and couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t losing any more weight even though I was running – actually more back then than I am now. Last few weeks have been telling as I started tracking what I have been eating and have figured out that I have not been eating enough. In fact I was surprised to see how little i was taking in vs how many calories I was expending in working out. There was a serious deficit and as most who know anything about nutrition will tell you, your metabolism will slow down and go into starvation mode if you are not eating enough to support your activity level.
Lose It – is a calorie tracking/activity tracking program that tracks your activities as well as what you eat on a day to day basis, it shows you how many calories you have available and there is a nutrition tracker as well.
Nike + is a system that tracks runs, it keeps track of your distance and your pace and works with Ipod Nano and or Ipod Iphone/Itouch and a little transmitter that either fits in a Nike+ enable shoe or in a Nike+ Pouch that you can wear on any sneaker.
Two other apps I use, 200 sit ups and 200 Squats. As good as these are they still require some tweaking and so Im not going to link to them – those who are interested in the apps can google them easily enough.
All of these apps (except lose it) allow you to connect to facebook and twitter to upload your info directly. all of them can be very useful and helpful to those trying to navigate their way through a healthier lifestyle.
Nintendo is getting in on this as well – there are now games for the WII that encourage exercise and EA Sports Active actually is like having a personal trainer with fully customizable workouts with a wide variety of activities. So if you don’t like going to the gym or need something to do on your off days this might be something worth looking at. I will actually have a full review of the EA Active Sports Program(s) – theres a new add on coming out soon, and I will be writing about both the original as well as the new one. Right now I am in the midst of a 5K challenge on EA Active Sports and have a group run coming up on November 17th in Central Park at the resvoir – will be writing on that as well…
so much writing so little time…
