PAYING THE COST FOR BEING HELPFUL

January 10, 2012  |  Featured, Mi Vida Loca  |  Share

Simple things are often contorted into the most complicated situations and scenarios. A great portion of human beings have a penchant for taking that which is simple and turning it into a complex ball of chaos. There are those that are imbued with a spirit that is led to help those who express need and who can become entangled in a web of chaos and confusion with those who have not mastered the ability to keep life and its experiences as simple as possible.

I am today paying the cost for being helpful. My spirit has always been set towards helping out whenever and where ever I see a need.  This position can and does leave one in an unenviable position of being taken advantage of – if one is not careful. It also can leave one open to abuse by those who are not enlightened enough to appreciate the help and its true source – the creator of all things.

When I was asked to do a favor of working on a site for someone who was in transition and who had a basic site on one of the major online blog sites, I did not hesitate to offer up a solution that would allow for this person to have a self-hosted site, free of charge. Hindsight being 20-20 says that this was a cardinal mistake however, I cannot do anything other than be true to my nature. To do anything else would be un-authentic.

While on the one hand, one should help as much as one can, it is equally important that one fine tune their ability for discernment and help within reason or the context of the situation at hand.  Pouring yourself out to help someone does not teach them an appreciation for being helped in many instances. In fact, ultimately it will lead to emptiness as you continue to pour out abilities, talents and skills for which you receive no recompense or acknowledgement.

The lesson is sometimes missed by the intended target and instead that which is given is met with demands for more. Worse the false impression of being “owed something” eventually will cast a pall over everything else and create an untenable situation from which very little good can be taken.

If by writing about paying the cost of being helpful, I can perhaps help someone else avoid a negative situation or enlighten them about how to deal with a current situation, then this has served its purpose.

This is not a gossip site who’s main purpose is to put people on blast or malign or foment drama and dissention.

It is hoped that those who visit this site will learn and perhaps even visit again.
